CBI Academy joins Interpol Global Academy Network

Context- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Academy recently joined Interpol’s Global Academy Network.
Key Highlights
- The network supports academic cooperation between police training institutions in different parts of the world.
- The CBI Academy has become the 10th member of Interpol’s global academic network.
Significance
- The collaboration will greatly benefit Indian police personnel and also provide quality capacity building, capacity building and training opportunities to police personnel worldwide.
CBI academy
- The CBI Academy in Ghaziabad is a premier training institute in the field of Criminal Investigation, Prosecution and Enforcement.
- The foundation stone of the CBI Academy was laid by Smt Margaret Alva.
- Over the years, the CBI Academy has emerged as the premier law enforcement institution in the country and South Asia.
- The CBI Academy has trained more than 50,000 police officers since 2005, including about 1,432 expatriates from SAARC countries, Africa, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and West Asia.
- The CBI is the nodal body for all matters relating to INTERPOL.
INTERPOL Global Academic Network
- The INTERPOL Global Academic Network was established in 2019 to support INTERPOL in leading a global approach to law enforcement training.
- The network has members in all regions and supports academic collaboration between police training institutions around the world.
International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL)
- It is an intergovernmental organization with 195 members.
- It helps police officers in all of them work together to make the world safer.

- In each country, INTERPOL’s National Central Office (NCB) acts as a central point of contact between the General Secretariat and other NCBs.
- CBI is designated as the national central agency of India.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was established by order of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on 1 April 1963.
- The CBI is not a statutory body, but its investigative powers are based on the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
- The CBI functions under the state Ministry of Personnel, Grievances and Pensions and is exempted from the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
- The Santhanam Anti-Corruption Commission recommended the creation of a CBI.
- The Government of India established the CBI in 1963 to investigate serious crimes related to India’s defence, high-level corruption, serious fraud, cheating and embezzlement, and social crimes, particularly hoarding, black marketing and profiteering. in major commodities with pan-India and inter-state implications.
- Section 6 of the DPSE Act empowers the Central Government to direct the CBI on the recommendation of the concerned State Government to investigate any case under the jurisdiction of the State.
- The CBI can suo-moto initiate investigations into crimes only in union territories.
