Context- The World Happiness Report 2023, compiled by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks nations in terms of happiness.
About World Happiness Report
- As a part of the celebration of the International Day of Happiness, the World Happiness Report has been released each year on March 20. This tradition began in 2012.
- Based on survey results from people in over 150 countries, the report ranks global happiness.
- The report ranked 136 nations this year.
- The positioning purposes six vital variables to gauge bliss — social help, pay, wellbeing, opportunity, liberality, and nonappearance of defilement.
- In addition to ranking the nations, the report examines the global situation in 2023.
What about the performance of the countries?

- Denmark comes in second place, followed by Iceland in third, making Finland the happiest nation for the sixth year in a row.
- This year, Lithuania (ranked 20th), a newcomer, joins the ranks in contrast to previous years, when the same nations typically made it into the top 20.

- The most unhappy country was Afghanistan, followed by Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, and Lebanon.

- India is one of the world’s least happy countries because it ranks 125th out of 136 countries.
- Out of 146 nations, India ranked 136th in 2022.
- It even lingers behind its adjoining countries like Nepal, China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SSDN)
- Under the direction of the United Nations Secretary-General, the UN SDSN was established in 2012.
- Through education, research, policy analysis, and international cooperation, SDSN encourages integrated approaches to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
