State of elementary education in rural India” report

Content:- The union education minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has recently released a report on “the state of elementary education in India.

Key points:-

  • It is mainly highlighting the prevalence of smartphone usage among students.
  • This was a collaborative effort which has given some findings with regards to their participation of the children in the elementary education and even the role of their parents as well as.
  • The survey was conducted by the Development Intelligence unit(DIU),with association between. NGO Transform Rural India and Sambodhi research and communications.

State of elementary education in rural India:-

About:-

  • The report is based on the concern of 6,229 parents of 6 to 16 aged children in rural communities across 21 states.
  • Among the 6229 parents of the children,6135 had school going children,56 had dropped out from school and 38 have never enrolled in school.
  • According to the report 49.3% of students have access to gadgets but only 34% of that number use them for studies meaning more students are using smartphones for entertainment than studies.
  • And about 80% of parents aspire for their children to graduate and attain higher degrees.

Key features:-

Smartphone usage by students:-

  •  According to the survey 49.3% of students in rural India have access to smartphones to play video games.
  • 56.6% used the device for downloading and watching movies and 47.3% used it for downloading and listening to music.
  • As stated in the survey only 34% of students are used for studying and 18% students are learning through online tutorials.

Child’s Gender:-

  • Even if a boy or girl, their education aspirations should not be hindered.
  • According to the survey 78% of parents aspire for their girls to attain graduation or higher degrees and 82% of the parents of boys wanted to educate their children to above the level of graduation.

Different classes:-

  • Usage of phones differs by different classes of students.
  • Class 8th  and above students had smartphones (58.32%).
  • And class 1 to 3 students had smartphones(42.1%).

Learning environment at home:-

  As per the report 40% parents said that age suitable materials and textbooks are available at home.

Role of parents/Parents participation:-

  • According to the report 40% of parents everyday have conversations with their children about learning at school and 32% of parents have conversations a few days a week.
  • About 84% of parents stated that they regularly attend parents teacher meetings at school,and those who don’t attend parents teacher meetings because of the short notice and lack of willingness.

Drop out students:-

 As per the report students are dropping out from school for some reasons

  • 36.8% of parents who had dropped out stated the reason that they were needed to help out with the family earnings and 31.6% lack of interest in studies while 21.1% believed that their daughters had to take care of household chores.
  • Boys drop out because of lack of interest in studies and 47.6% drop out because of help in their family.

Conclusion:-

 As per report

  • Up to elementary education, the percentage of boys(4.4)  is more than girls.(3.9)
  • Up to secondary education the girls percentage (2.8) is more than boys(2.4).
  • Up to higher secondary also girls(15.2) is more than boys(11.1).
  • Up to graduation girls(50.3) are more interested in than boys(49.6).
  • Up to post graduation boys(32.5) are more than girls(27.8)
