Arunachal Pradesh-Assam Dispute

Context – Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border dispute to be settled by 2023 says Union Home Minister.

The Union Home Minister said that the boundary dispute between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam is expected to be “resolved before 2023”.

Key Developments

  • He asserted that the Centre is committed to bringing peace and development to the region. 
  • The authority stated over 60% of the interstate border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has been resolved. 
  • The Union Home minister said the insurgency in the Bodoland region of Assam was resolved through the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord. 
  • He further highlighted that a three-pronged agenda has been prepared for the development of the Northeast. 
  • The three prolonged agenda includes:
  1. Preservation and promotion of Indigenous cultures
  2. Ending disputes among the northeastern states.
  3. The development of the eight north eastern states.

About the Dispute

  • Assam has had boundary disputes with all the north-eastern States that were carved out of it. Assam shares an 804.10 km inter-state boundary with Arunachal Pradesh. 
  • The state of Arunachal Pradesh, created in 1987, claims some land that traditionally belonged to its residents has been given to Assam. 
  • A tripartite committee had recommended that certain territories be transferred from Assam to Arunachal. The two states have since been battling it out in the court over the issue.
