Syllabus: International relations[GS Paper-2]

Context: Hamas launched a major attack on Israel, involving gunmen in Israeli towns and rocket barrages from Gaza. Israel responded with strikes, sparking global reactions. Here is reaction to the attack from around the world.

Details about the news:

  • Palestinian fighters carried out a significant attack on Israel on October 7. They infiltrated southern Israel and launched a large number of rockets from the Gaza Strip. This operation, called “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm,” is one of the most significant clashes between the two sides in recent times. The attack involved rocket fire from various places in Gaza and also utilised unconventional methods like paragliders and fighters within Israel.
  • According to the Israeli military, Hamas carried out a planned attack that included launching rockets and infiltrating Israeli territory.
  • Israel announced that it was prepared for war and initiated its own attacks on Hamas targets in Gaza. Reports from Israeli media indicated confrontations between groups of Palestinian fighters and security forces in the south of Israel.
About the Hamas:
  • Hamas, also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, was established in 1987 during the initial Palestinian uprising called the Intifada. It receives support from Iran, a Shi’ite country, and follows the Islamist principles of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group that originated in Egypt in the 1920s.
  • The group has been in control of the Gaza Strip since 2007, following a short conflict with supporters of the Fatah movement led by President Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas is based in the West Bank and also leads the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
  • In 2006, Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections and subsequently took control of Gaza. Hamas accused Abbas of plotting against them, while Abbas referred to the events as a coup.
  • Since that time, there have been several instances of conflict between Israel and Hamas, typically characterised by rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and retaliatory airstrikes and bombardment by Israel on Gaza.
  • Hamas does not acknowledge Israel as a state and strongly opposed the Oslo peace agreements that were made between Israel and the PLO in the 1990s, resorting to violence.
  • Hamas, a Palestinian organisation, operates an armed branch known as the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades. This group has carried out attacks in Israel using both gunmen and suicide bombers. Hamas justifies these actions as a form of resistance against Israeli occupation.
  • Hamas was established in 1988 with a mission to destroy Israel, but its leaders have occasionally proposed a long-term truce with Israel in exchange for a Palestinian state on the territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 war. However, Israel sees this offer as deceptive.
  • Hamas is recognized as a terrorist group by various countries including Israel, the United States, European Union, Canada, Egypt, and Japan. It is also aligned with Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, all of which share similar opposition to U.S. policies in the Middle East and Israel.
