Context-Every year May 11 is celebrated as the National Technology day.
Significance of the day:
- The country pays tribute to the prowess of Indian scientists in different fields of science, technology, agriculture, medicine, defence,space exploration,etc
- On this day the government institutions,schools and colleges hold programmes honoring the contributions and achievements of Indian scientists.
- This day celebrates the growth of science and technology’s development in India and especially the development of nuclear technology.
- The year 2023 marks the 25th year of the National Technology day.
History of the day:
- On May 11,1998 India conducted a series of five nuclear tests (Pokhran II) at the Pokhran test range,Rajasthan under the leadership of the then Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- The first nuclear test was conducted in 1974.Following the nuclear test of 1998 India became the world’s sixth nuclear test for which the U.S had put sanctions on India.
- Following this day the government of India declared May 11 as the National Technology Day,celebrating and acknowledging the contributions of scientists and engineers of the country.
Theme
- The theme for the year 2023 is ‘ School to Startups- Igniting Young Minds to Innovate’.
Key projects this year
- The Prime minister shall lay the foundation for multiple scientific and technological advancement related projects worth ₹5800 crore.
- The foundation shall be laid for the LIGO-India- Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory ,Hingoli, Homi Bhabha Cancer hospital and research center at Jatni,Odisha.
- Special focus shall be made on the AIM- Atal Innovation Mission. Projects on development of Fission Molybdenum -99 Production facility, Rare earth permanent magnet plant,National Hadron Beam Therapy facility for cancer treatment shall also be made.
