Context- The Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA) has recently notified the introduction of the ‘Leniency plus’ regime, which is recognised in jurisdictions like the UK, US, Singapore and Brazil.

What is Cartelisation?

  • According to the CCI, cartelisation is a practice wherein a group of competitors (manufacturers, dealers, vendors, and so forth) form an agreement to limit competition.
  • It reduces output while growing expenses, driving customers out of the market (if they do not want to pay a higher price) and unknowingly transferring wealth (in the event that they need to pay).
  • A cartel protects its individuals from full marketplace exposure, which reduces costs even as harming overall economic performance and innovation.
