India – USA 2+2 Dialogue to be held

[GS Paper 2 – International Relations]

Defence Minister and External Affairs minister of India will hold talks with the US Defence Secretary and secretary of state on April 11th in Washington.

It will allow the Nations to exchange views on important regional developments.

Significance of the Talks

  • It will provide an opportunity to exchange views on global developments.

  • The both sides will have a word over how they can work together to address common interests and concerns.

  • The dialogue would allow both sides to receive a comprehensive review of cross-cutting issues in India-US bilateral agenda related to foreign policy, defence and security.

  • The Ukraine issue is expected to be discussed.

  • Both sides would have a discussion on Defence Cooperation between the two sides for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

India-US Relations:

  • India USA holds a friendly bilateral relation. The relationship between the nations has developed into a global strategic partnership.

  • Increasing convergence of Interests on regional, global issues and shared democratic values has been the keys of the relationship.

  • India-US Bilateral Relation is multi sectoral covering: Trade and Investment, Defence and Security, Science and Technology, Cyber Security, Education, Civil Nuclear Energy, Space technology, Clean Energy, Environment, Agriculture, Health, People to people interaction.

  • India-US strategic partnership has resulted in a strong defence relationship. Both nations are involved in defence trade, joint exercises, and cooperation in maritime security and counter piracy:

  1. Yudh Abhyas (Joint Military Exercise)
  2. Tiger Triumph
  3. Vajra Prahar
  4. Cope India (Air Force)
  5. Malabar Exercise

  • India-US are parts of the following cooperation – G20, QUAD, India-US-Japan Trilateral.

  • Both the countries hold the following high-level dialogues:
  1. India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue
  2. India-US Trade Policy Forum
  3. India-US Economic and Financial Partnership
  4. India-US Commercial Dialogue
  5. India-US Strategic Energy Partnership
  6. India-US Homeland Security Dialogue

  • Both nations hold four agreements:
  1. GSOMIA( military information agreement)
  2. LEMOA (logistics exchange agreement)
  3. COMCASA(communications security agreement)
  4. BECA (Basic Exchange Cooperation Agreement)
