Good Governance Index 2021 launched by Home Ministry

Gujarat has topped the composite ranking in the Good Governance Index (GGI), followed by Maharashtra and Goa while Uttar Pradesh showed an incremental growth of 8.9 per cent in the indicators launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the occasion of the Good Governance Day on Saturday. As many as 20 states have improved their composite GGI scores in 2021, according to the index. Gujarat topped the composite ranking in the 58 indicator index followed by Maharashtra and Goa. Uttar Pradesh has registered an 8.9 per cent improvement in the GGI indicators in the period 2019 to 2021 while Jammu and Kashmir registered an improvement of 3.7 per cent in the same period, it said.

Haryana tops Citizen Centric Governance Index

The state of Haryana has secured the top position in Citizen Centric Governance Sector Ranking for the year 2021. According to a government spokesperson, the state topped Group A category by securing a collective score of 0.914 in Citizen Centric Governance and four indicators. The Citizen Centric Governance indicator is focused on outcomes like Right to Service Act, grievance redress mechanism (GRM) and the progress made by state governments in providing the services online. Home Minister Amit Shah released the Good Governance Index 2021 on the occasion of Good Governance Day, on December 25, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This index is prepared by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

NASA’s James Webb telescope launched

The world’s largest and most-powerful space telescope has rocketed away on a high-stakes quest to behold light from the first stars and galaxies and scour the universe for hints of life. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope soared from French Guiana on South America’s north-eastern coast, riding a European Ariane rocket into the Christmas morning sky. The $10 billion observatory hurtled toward its destination 1.6 million kilometres away, more than four times the distance to the Moon. It will take a month to get there and another five months before its infrared eyes are ready to start scanning the cosmos.

EU initiates action after Poland violates bloc laws

The EU announced on Wednesday it is launching legal action against Poland for ignoring European Union law and undermining the independence of its national judiciary. EU economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said the infringement proceedings targeted Poland for breaching the primacy of EU law and for deciding that certain articles of EU treaties were incompatible with Polish laws. The step escalates a long-running feud between Warsaw and Brussels over Poland’s perceived backsliding on EU democratic norms. Brussels is already withholding approval of coronavirus recovery funds for Poland over the row.

Panel formed to decide withdrawal of AFSPA

A committee will be constituted, which will have to submit its report within 45 days on withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Area Act from Nagaland, informed the state government. “A committee will be instituted to look into the withdrawal of AFSPA in Nagaland…The Committee will submit its report in 45 days & withdrawal of Disturbed Area and AFSPA from Nagaland will be based on its recommendations,” reads the official statement. The decision was taken in a meeting that was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday in New Delhi. The Chief Ministers of Nagaland and Assam– Neiphiu Rio and Himanta Biswa Sarma– were present in the meeting along with the leader of Naga People’s Front Legislative Party T.R. Zeliang.
