Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

Syllabus- Polity & Governance [GS Paper-2]

Context

The Central government has recently issued an advisory to all intermediaries and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) platforms using artificial intelligence (AI) models, software or algorithms.

Key Highlights

  • All Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, large-language models (LLMs), software programs using generative AI or any algorithms which are currently being tested, should be seeking for “explicit permission of the authorities of India” earlier than being deployed for users on the Indian internet.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a late-night advisory on March 1, a first-of-its-kind globally.
  • It asked all platforms to make sure that their computer sources no longer allow any bias or discrimination or threaten the integrity of the electoral system through the use of AI, generative AI, LLMs or such a different algorithm.
  • The government advisory comes days after a social media put up on X claimed that Google’s AI version Gemini became biased whilst requested if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a “fascist”.
  • The consumer claimed that Google’s AI GPT version Gemini became “downright malicious” for giving responses to questions which sought to know whether or not a few outstanding international leaders have been “fascist”.
  • Google later stated it was working to repair the problems and was quickly preventing Gemini from producing images as well.

Role/Influence of GenAI on Elections in 2024

  • 2024 will see high-stakes elections in over 50 nations, such as India, the US, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Russia, Taiwan, and South Africa.
  • Like in previous elections, one of the most important challenges citizens will face may be the prevalence of faux news, particularly as AI generation makes it less complicated to create and disseminate.
  • The World Economic Forum 2024 Global Risk Report ranked AI-derived wrong information and its potential for societal polarization as considered one of its top 10 risks over the following years.
  • People with very little technical information are capable of using generative AI gear to disseminate fake textual content, pictures, films, and audio across a big digital base in more than one different languages.
  • In addition to spreading propaganda through the use of a small information set, AI is capable of creating deep-fakes and producing voice-cloned audio, presenting extensive challenges for governments and corporations internationally.
  • Through its mastery of language, AI can shape intimate relationships with humans, using that intimacy to customise messages and influence worldviews.
  • In India, AI is likewise being used by politicians to reach out to more people, particularly in rural areas.
  • For example, a real-time AI-powered tool was used to translate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech from Hindi to Tamil at some stage in an event in Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.
  • As with any new generation, there may be a query of how AI may be used and misused.
  • Many respond to the chance with alarm, even as others see its potential as a positive force.

About Generative Artificial Intelligence

  • Generative AI refers to deep-learning models that may take raw information and “analyze” to generate statistically likely outputs while induced.
  • Generative AI is powered by foundation models (large AI models) that can multi-task and perform out-of-the-box tasks, including summarization, Q&A, classification, and more.
  • With minimum training required, basis models can be tailored for targeted use cases with very little example records.

How Does Generative AI Work?

  • Generative AI works by a Machine Learning model to study the styles and relationships in a dataset of human-created content.
  • It then uses the learned patterns to generate new content.
  • The most common manner to train a generative AI version is to use supervised mastering – the model is given a set of human-created content and corresponding labels.
  • It then learns to generate content material that is just like the human-created content and categorised with the same labels.

Common Generative AI Applications

  • Generative AI strategies massive content, growing insights and solutions thru text, pics, and consumer-friendly formats. Generative AI can be used to:
  • Improve purchaser interactions through more suitable chat and seek stories,
  • Explore sizable amounts of unstructured information through conversational interfaces and summarizations,
  • Assist with repetitive tasks like replying to requests for proposals, localizing advertising content material in 5 languages, and checking purchaser contracts for compliance, and more.
