At Delhi Summit, Demonstrate Climate Leadership

Context:-

This article emphasises on clean energy and climate goals on which the G-20 nations must work together to achieve it. 

It is the important G-20 summit which is a good chance for the leaders to be committed to counter climate change.

The energy shift of G-20 Countries

The renewable energy mix has been increased by the members from 19% in 2010 to 29% in 2021.

India Became the third largest renewable energy producer which is targeting 50% renewable energy by 2030.

It highlights the importance of low-carbon steel production transition. G-20 produces 90% of global steel which is a support for Green Steel.

The upcoming G-20 summit in New Delhi is a very important platform for all the countries to further commit to clean energy and climate goals.

What is needed by G-20 countries to create a significant energy shift?

  • Energy Transition Improvement in Governments:-
  • Governance Structure should be made clear and it must be ensured that the processes are inclusive and have equitable results and avoidance of siloed operations.
  • Successful models to be emulated.  South Africa’s just transition framework cues to be taken which was spearheaded by the Presidential Climate Commission.
  • Decarbonization and its Importance:-
  • There is an urgent need for industrial shift (Transitions to Low-Carbon Steel) as G-20 countries are responsible for 90% of steel production.
  • Green financial support: Renewable projects are to be supported by encouraging financial institutions for it and embrace low-carbon technologies. 
  • For example, Green Public Procurement can be highly beneficial by achieving this.
  • The Need for Transparency in Energy Transitions:-
  • Accountability must be maintained by tracking progress feedback of G-20 Countries allowing them to disclose their progress on energy transitions. It will ensure that they are on the track.
  • Collaboration and exchange of best Practices can be ensured and encouraged by utilising platforms such as G-20 Energy Transitions and sustainable Finance Working Groups, along with the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-PS).
  • Unifying for Collective Climate Leadership:-
  • Due to the urgency associated with the challenge, Climate change demands collaborative & mutual action immediately. 
  • The G-20 must take a lead role in the three areas of action – governance for just transitions, economic diversification, and enhanced transparency – to ensure a just, inclusive, and sustainable future where no country is left behind.

Conclusion:-

The G-20 summit going to be held in New Delhi is a very crucial opportunity for the countries to adopt a strong leader’s declaration which shall commit to fight climate change through collective & collaborative action.
