Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0

Context- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Central Government’s ambitious Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, drinking water project in Karnataka.
Key Highlights
- Recently a new Jal Bhavan building was constructed at a cost of ₹13.86 crore by the Karnataka Urban Water Supply Drainage Board (KUWSDB) at Rajapur locality in Kalaburagi.
- The building has been inaugurated as part of the AMRUT 2.0 as the Central government is committed to providing non-stop drinking water to all households.
- Also the Central government has allocated ₹9,000 crore to the State under AMRUT 2.0.
- It has been the biggest contribution of the Centre to the State so far, he said that, with this allocation, it will be possible to launch the 24 x 7 drinking water supply scheme in 160 civic bodies across the State (80% of the civic bodies).
AMRUT 2.0
- The Government of India has launched the second phase of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) across states in 2021.
- Pey Jal Survekshan in cities under AMRUT 2.0 is a target adopted by the government to assess the compliance of service level benchmarks with respect to quality, quantity and coverage of water supply in the city.
- This will also assess the necessary steps taken in reduction of Non Revenue Water through water clusters, rejuvenation of water bodies and skill development.
- Recently launched Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 aims to create water secure cities, providing universal coverage of water in all statutory towns and 100% coverage of sewage or septage management in 500 AMRUT cities.
AMRUT Scheme
- Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was renamed to Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and relaunched by Prime Minister of India in 2015.
- Its aim is to establish infrastructure that could ensure adequate robust sewage networks and water supply for urban transformation by implementing urban revival projects.
- Rajasthan was the first state in the country to submit the State Annual Action Plan under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
- The objective of AMRUT scheme is
- To ensure that every household has access to a tap with assured supply of water and a sewerage connection;
- To increase the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well maintained open spaces (e.g. parks);
- To reduce pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorized transport (e.g.walking and cycling).
