Quad: A Security Alliance

  • The Quad embodies India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia, was adopted in 2007 but regained importance in 2017 due to China’s grow­ing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Quad aspires to improve security in the Asia-Pacific region, especially maritime, and advance economic relations and democratic principles. It has adapted to face emerging global issues, such as climate change, cyber security threat, and epidemiology issues, including the current coronavirus disease.

BRICS: An Economic Coalition

  • As the arrangement of five international political economy’s giants – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRIC is an approach to address and organize cooperation among rising economies.
  • Thus, it is centered on the changes of global institutions, on the strenghtening of international cooperation, and on some matters of concern for the Global South.
  • Together, the countries of BRICS account for approximately 40% of the global population, and this organization aims at increasing the countries’ influence in global decision-making processes.

  • BRICS has established financial institutions like the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), which provide financial support for development projects and enhance economic resilience among member nations. 
  • These initiatives are crucial for fostering sustainable development and addressing infrastructure deficits in developing countries.

Amplifying Voices in Global Governance

  • With its substantial population and economic weight, BRICS has the potential to amplify the voices of its members in global governance. 
  • It advocates for reforms in institutions like the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. 
  • This aligns with India’s aspirations for a more representative and equitable global order.

India’s Role in Quad and BRICS

  • India’s membership in both the Quad and BRICS presents a unique diplomatic challenge. 
  • The Quad strengthens ties with Western democracies, enhancing India’s role in regional security and economic initiatives in the Indo-Pacific. 
  • Meanwhile, BRICS allows engagement with emerging economies in the Global South, though India’s enthusiasm has varied due to concerns over China’s dominance within the group. 
  • India’s strategy is to maintain a balance, ensuring BRICS does not become anti-Western, while also expanding its influence and aligning the group’s goals with its national interests.
