Science Centres Established Under SPoCS Scheme

Context

  • Through its Ministry of Culture the Government of India leads work toward scientific awareness and innovation development among citizens by implementing the Scheme for Promotion of Culture of Science (SPoCS). 
  • The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, serves as the implementing agency for this initiative. 
  • SPoCS establishes Science Cities and Science Centers and Digital Planetariums and Innovation Hubs through state government proposals received by union territories and states.

Key Science Centres

North Bengal Science Centre, Siliguri (Darjeeling District)

  • Inauguration: Opened on 17th August 1997.
  • The organization operated and managed by NCSM oversees these facilities.
  • On 16th February 2018 Innovation Hub began operations as a center that facilitates student-based scientific learning and creative development. It is also managed by NCSM.

Sub-Regional Science Centre, Kalimpong (Kalimpong District)

  • The former Science Cities established this site before transferring it to the State Government on September 11th 2007.
  • Inauguration: Officially inaugurated on 2nd October 2008.
  • The Innovation Hub started its operations on February 25th 2017 and moved to the control of the State Government. The facility seeks to boost innovative experimentation and original thinking among youths.
