PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)- C55/TeLEOS-2
Syllabus- Defence Technology [GS Paper-3]

Context- The PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)-C55/TeLEOS-2 mission was recently successfully launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
Key Highlights of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle
- This is PSLV’s 16th mission in the PSLV Core Alone configuration (PSLV-CA), marking its 57th flight.
- TeLEOS-2 serves as the primary satellite and Lumelite-4 serves as a co-passenger satellite, both of which are Singaporean satellites, and it is a specialized commercial mission carried out by NSIL (New Space India Limited).
- The non-separating payloads carried by the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-2 (POEM-2) served as the scientific experiments’ orbital platform.
TeLEOS-2:
- The primary satellite that the rocket will carry is an Earth Observation Satellite (EOS).
- TeLEOS-1 was launched into low Earth orbit in 2015 by ISRO for remote sensing purposes. Nine Singapore-branded satellites have been launched so far by ISRO.
- The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload on TeLEOS-2 can take full-polarimetric images at 1 meter. It will be able to cover all times of day and night.
- SAR is a type of active radar imaging technology that creates a high-resolution, three-dimensional image of the target area by utilizing the motion of the radar antenna.
LUMILITE-4:
- It is a cutting-edge 12U satellite designed for the High-Performance Space-borne VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) technological demonstration.
- “12U” alludes to a normalized structure factor for CubeSats, which are little satellites with a secluded plan.
- In the 12U structure factor, the CubeSat estimates 24 x 24 x 36 cm and has a volume of 20.7 liters.
- Its goal is to make e-navigation maritime safety in Singapore better and to help the shipping industry around the world.
- It is the co-traveler satellite being sent alongside TeLEOS-2
What is POEM?
- POEM is an ISRO experiment that uses the PSLV launch vehicle’s fourth stage as an orbital platform to carry out in-orbit scientific experiments.
- The PSLV is a four-stage rocket in which the first three spent stages sink back into the ocean and the fourth stage, PS4, becomes space junk after the satellite is launched into orbit.
- For attitude stabilization, POEM has its own NGC (Navigation Guidance and Control) system. This system is responsible for keeping any aerospace vehicle’s orientation within the allowed range.
- The NGC will go about as the stage’s cerebrum to settle it with determined exactness.
