Ru-Soam Bridges

In News: UNESCO has collaborated with the Government of Sikkim to capture the engineering practices of indigenous Ru-Soam (cane bridge) works in Sikkearh.

  • The project is being achieved in the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve with the assistance of Airbnb.
  • About Ru-Soam Bridges
  • Ru-Soam are traditional cane bridge constructions, found in the Lepcha community.
  • The materials used to construct these bridges include naturally found materials locally, like bamboo, cane, and wood.
  • They have a great degree of ecological awareness and structural stability that befits a mountainous landscape.

Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) 2.0 Guidelines

In News: The latest National Summit on Good Practices and Innovations in Public Healthcare Service Delivery saw the release of the latest Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) 2.0 Guidelines.

  • Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) is an intervention program to enhance the total living standards of the children and to offer overall care to all the children in the community. 
  • It is a process of screening of children between birth and up to the age of 18, on four Ds-Defects at birth, Diseases, Deficiencies and Development delays, covering 32 common health conditions to identify early and provide free treatment and management, including surgeries that are tertiary level.
  • Early intervention services and subsequent care are offered at the district level to children diagnosed with identified health conditions.

Girmitiya Communities

In News: The External Affairs Minister will be on an official visit to Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. 

  • These nations have a special rapport with India due to the existence of Girmitiya communities. 
  • Girmitiya Community: “Girmitiyas were Indian labourers who left India in the mid- to late 19th century to work in the British colonies, many of whom eventually settled there.
  • The Girmit is simply a misspronunciation of the word Agreement, which addressed the agreement upon which they were migrating.
  • The labourers were taken to colonies like Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, etc.
  • They are highly connected with Bihar and Eastern UP  and have a Bhojpuri-speaking culture.
