In News: The World Health Organization (WHO) added the first molecular diagnostic test for the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) to its Emergency Use Listing (EUL) on July 2, 2026. This decision significantly enhances the speed and accuracy of testing during the expanding Ebola outbreak in central Africa.
About Bundibugyo virus (BDBV)
Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) is one of four distinct species of the Orthoebolavirus genus known to cause severe, potentially fatal viral hemorrhagic fever in humans. First identified in 2007 during an outbreak in the Bundibugyo District of Uganda, it is the causative agent behind Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD).
Viral Profile & Classification
- Taxonomy: It belongs to the Filoviridae family under the specific species name Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense.
- Danger Level: It is classified globally as a Risk Group 4 Pathogen, requiring the highest biosafety containment level (BSL-4) for laboratory handling.
- Historical Mortality: BDBV historically exhibits a case fatality rate (CFR) ranging between 30% and 50%. While devastating, this is lower than the 40% to 90% fatality rates often seen in Zaire ebolavirus outbreaks.
Transmission and Reservoir
- Natural Reservoir: Fruit bats (specifically from the Pteropodidae family) are considered the primary natural reservoir host for the virus.
- Animal-to-Human Spillover: Humans contract the virus initially through direct contact with the blood, organs, or bodily fluids of infected wildlife, such as bats, nonhuman primates, or forest antelopes (often via bushmeat preparation).
- Human-to-Human Spread: The virus is not airborne. It spreads strictly through direct contact with the blood, vomit, feces, urine, saliva, or semen of a symptomatic or deceased infected individual. Contact with contaminated surfaces or clothes also spreads the pathogen.
