• The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) provides pregnant women with free, comprehensive antenatal check-ups and early risk detection on the 9th of every month. Over its 10 years, it has conducted over 7.5 crore check-ups and significantly aided the decline of India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR). 

Background & Core Objectives

• Launch Date: June 9, 2016.
• Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
• Goal: Reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by identifying and managing high-risk pregnancies (HRP) early. 

Key Features & Implementation

• The “9th of Every Month” Rule: Assured, fixed-day antenatal care (ANC) is provided to all pregnant women at designated government health facilities. 
• Target Demographic: Pregnant women specifically in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters. 
• Minimum Care Package: Includes clinical examinations, blood/urine tests, ultrasonography (USG), medicines, and counseling on nutrition and birth planning. 
• e-PMSMA: Launched to track individual high-risk pregnancies and ensure continuous follow-up care. 

Rejuvenation of Yamuna River

In News: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting, directing Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh to implement an integrated action plan rather than a fragmented approach. The states must collectively maintain ecological flow and halt untreated waste from entering the river. 

Key Directives for Rejuvenation

• Dairy Waste Management: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) will sign an MoU to convert cattle waste into biogas and fertilizer. 
• Infrastructure Expansion: The states are working on a combined total of 188 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), with 129 already completed and 59 more planned for completion by the end of next year. 
• Silt Management: Desilting of drains is progressing rapidly, with extracted silt to be repurposed for manufacturing projects to prevent it from washing back into the river. 
• Accountability & Monitoring: Regular third-party quality checks of water discharge will be conducted, and project progress will be formally reviewed every 20 days. 

Preventive Detentions

In News: A few days ago, the Allahabad High Court voiced its concern on the misuse of the preventive detention under the law. 

• Preventive detention is the detention of a person without trial with a view to preventing him or her from committing an act that would threaten the public order, national security or other important interests of the state. 
• Unlike punitive detention, preventive detention is not a punishment for conviction by a court of law; rather preventive detention is based on the assumption that the person might commit to an activity which is harmful to:
  • State security;
  • Defence of India;
  • Public order;
  • Foreign affairs; or
  • Help with the provision of essential goods and services.
• The Constitution has vested the authority to take out measures to bar detention cases in between Union and the States. 

Gallantry Awards

In News: President presented Gallantry Awards to the personnel of the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and State/Union Territory Police in Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan. 

• Seven Kirti Chakras, 15 Vir Chakras and 29 Shaurya Chakras have been awarded by the President.  
• One of the four Gaganyatris chosen for India’s Human Space Flight Mission Gaganyaan, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair was awarded Kirti Chakra for his indomitable spirit and bravery. 
• The Gallantry Awards, presented by the Government of India, honour acts of Gallantry, Sacrifice and Extraordinary Courage of persons serving in the Armed Forces, Paramilitary Forces and Civilian field.
• Awards are given for wartime events (gallantry in the face of enemy) and also for peacetime events.
• Administered by: MoD (Armed forces) and MoHA (Police and civilians).
• Presenters: President of India.
• These gallantry awards are announced twice a year – during the Republic Day and Independence Day.

Tejas

In News: The Defence Minister reviewed the progress of major ongoing projects of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) where delays in the delivery of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A was also discussed.

• The Ministry of Defence had signed an agreement to buy 97 LCA Tejas Mark-1A for IAF from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
• The $24 million procurement is for the replacement of the old MiG 21 soon to be phased out fleet of aircraft.
• The Tejas Mk1A induction has been made compulsory for operational necessity for IAF as they have only 29 fighter squadrons and with this induction they would have 13.5 squadrons.
