Context

The Government of India has reopened the application window for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods, specifically covering air conditioners (ACs) and LED lights. The application window is open from September 15 to October 14, 2025. This decision comes in response to growing industry interest and market demand, encouraging further investments under the scheme.

Background and Objective

The PLI Scheme for White Goods was approved by the Union Cabinet in April 2021 with a financial outlay of ₹6,238 crore. The scheme aims to promote domestic manufacturing of white goods, reduce import dependency, and position India as a global manufacturing hub. It incentivizes companies to manufacture key components of ACs and LED lights, including those components not presently produced in sufficient quantities in India.

Scope and Eligibility

Both new applicants and existing beneficiaries of the scheme are eligible to apply during the reopened window. Existing beneficiaries can apply if they propose to invest more by switching to a higher target segment or through their group companies applying under different segments. This inclusive approach ensures fairness and aims to maximize industry participation.

Incentives and Duration

Under the scheme, eligible manufacturers receive financial incentives ranging from 4% to 6% on incremental sales of the covered products. The scheme spans seven years from FY 2021-22 to FY 2028-29. Applicants approved in this fourth round will be eligible for incentives for the remainder of the scheme’s tenure, or for a maximum of two years in cases involving new investors or beneficiaries opting for higher investment categories.

Market Growth and Industry Confidence

The reopening has been driven by a strong appetite among industry players to invest further, reflecting the growing market for white goods such as ACs and LED lights. Urbanization, rising incomes, and demand for energy-efficient appliances have fueled this market growth. The scheme has successfully encouraged manufacturing investments amounting to ₹10,406 crore committed by 83 applicants so far, including major domestic and international brands.

Significance for India’s Manufacturing and Economy

The PLI Scheme for White Goods supports India’s push for self-reliance by building domestic manufacturing capabilities. It improves supply chains, reduces reliance on imports of critical components, and enhances the global competitiveness of India-made white goods. Additionally, it encourages technology transfer, skill development, and innovation in energy-efficient and eco-friendly appliances.

Conclusion

The government’s decision to reopen the PLI scheme application window for white goods underscores the growing market potential and the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem. By providing financial incentives and encouraging greater investment, the scheme is poised to accelerate production, create jobs, and contribute to India’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing hub.
