About
- Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is a statutory institution that regulates and controls the Indian pension industry.
- It was introduced as an interim body in 2003, and made a statutory body and its implementation announced in 2013 under the PFRDA Act.
- It has a major goal of encouraging, managing, and controlling the organized development of the pension sector, with an aim of meeting the income security requirement of the old age of the diversified population of India.
History of PFRDA
- PFRDA was a landmark move in bridging the gap of the existence of unstructured pension schemes among the working population in India particularly in the unorganized and private sectors.
- Prior to the establishment of PFRDA, the schemes of pension programs had been largely limited to employees of the government, and the majority of the population was not covered by pension schemes.
- It is in light of this difference that the Government of India in 2004 came up with the National Pension System (NPS), a breakthrough program to make pension provisions to cover more than just government workers.
- PFRDA had a role to regulate and promote this system so as to have inclusivity and sustainability.
