Context– The Union Minister of Ports,Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal recently made five major announcements focusing on green shipping and digitisation of ports with the aim of making India a global leader in the maritime sector.
Key Highlights:
- The announcements were made in the MoPSW’s “Chintan Shivir” held in Munnar.
- The announcements were made to revolutionize the Indian maritime industry and promote sustainable shipping practices.
Major Announcement under the “Panch Karma Sankalp”
- The MoPSW made 5 major announcement that include on providing 30% financial support for promotion of green shipping (i.e,transport using minimum energy and resources thereby helping reducing pollutants generated by ships protecting the environment)
- Under the Tug Transition programme Jawaharlal Nehru port,VO Chidambaranar port,Paradip port and Deendayal Port, Kandla shall procure two tugs.
- The development of Green hydrogen hub at Tuticorin,Deendayal port and VO Chidambaranar port focusing on development and utilization of green hydrogen that is an environmentally friendly and sustainable source of energy.
- Single Window portal to monitor and facilitate river and sea cruises ensuring efficiency and seamless experience for cruise passengers and operators.
- Development of the Jawaharlal Nehru port and VO Chidambaranar Port and Tuticorin as smart ports by 2024 with advanced technologies digitalisation,automation and enhanced security and operational efficiency.
