NASA’s PREFIRE to Monitor Climate Change

Syllabus: Science and Technology [GS Paper-3]

Context

NASA’s Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-Infrared Experiment (PREFIRE) mission is a crucial step towards understanding climate change and its impact on our planet. The mission aims to measure the heat emitted by Earth’s polar regions, which is essential for improving climate models and predicting the consequences of global warming.

PREFIRE Mission Objectives

The primary objectives of the PREFIRE mission are to:

  • Getting the ranges of far-infrared irradiance at Polar zones of the Earth
  • The following is what we need to discover and understand regarding the heat that is lost from the poles.
  • Contribute towards enhancing the accuracy of climate models and forecasts
  • It will also reduce the impacts of climate change

PREFIRE Satellite and Instruments

The PREFIRE mission is a two-CubeSat formation in near-polar orbits that will take place in the future. The instruments provided with each satellite include a thermal infrared spectrometer, which is to help assess the far-infrared radiation in the polar regions. Spectrometers that the order consists of are for infrared wavelengths, which is important for the study of the Earth’s energy balances as well as climatology.

Launch and Deployment

The first PREFIRE satellite was successfully launched on May 25, 2024, using Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 in Māhia Peninsula, New Zealand. The second satellite is still under construction, but it will be launched soon. Once in the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the Earth, these satellites will survey the far-infrared energy originating from these areas.

Significance of PREFIRE Mission

The PREFIRE mission is important because it will return invaluable data pertaining to radiant temperature of polar territories of Earth which is critical in comprehension of the Earth’s energy budget and climate system. The mission will help enhance the climate modeling systems and forecast hence assisting the policy makers and scientific researchers through enhancing better approaches to address the effects of climate change.

Conclusion

Therefore, the PREFIRE mission can be considered as an essential component of the Mars exploration to reveal the effects of climate change. The specific objectives of the mission, the properties of the chosen satellite and the instruments onboard are all aimed at collecting data that is relevant and important for refining climate models and forecasts. With the help of PREFIRE, people shall be closer to understanding the changes in the Earth’s energy balance of the climate system, and further, prevent the negative consequences of the climate change.
