Nagaland’s ‘Morung’ Education Model

Context

In 132nd Mann Ki Baat (March 29, 2026), PM Narendra Modi lauded the Naga community’s Morung system that integrates traditional knowledge with modern education as a holistic learning model.

What is the ‘Morung’ Education System?

The Morung (bachelor’s dormitory) was the nucleus of the social, cultural and educational life of the Naga community. It was an indigenous learning center where: 

• Mentorship: The tribal elders imparted traditional knowledge, history, life skills to the youth through lived examples. 
• Pedagogy: Informal mode of education like stories, folk songs, traditional games, dance etc. 
• Life Skills: Discipline, teamwork, community service, and art forms like wood carving, blacksmithing etc were imparted to the young men. 

The Evolution: Tradition Meets Modernity

PM Modi highlighted that the Morung system is not at all a relic of the past, but have now been updated into a “Morung concept of education” which is one of the major exemplars in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 of integration of local culture with modern education.

• The modern subjects: The modern Morungs have added to it now the spread of curiosity and interest amongst the youth in modern subjects like maths, science etc.
• The Holistic education: The elders of the village impart basic concepts of academics and life skills through stories and games etc which make it more holistic and relatable.
• The Cultural Continuity: The system is highlighting that while modernising the Naga youth, they should not lose their roots, their history and their tribal identity.

Significance of the ‘Morung’ System for Modern India

• Revaluating Indian Knowledge Systems: The contemporary cultural system is a great example of how indigenous pedagogic methods can be implemented to make learning more grounded, disciplined and culturally relevant.
• Community-Driven Education: The modern morung model has provided an example where community itself has taken the responsibility of the education of their youth.
• Skill-Based Education: The morung system has focused on imparting traditional skills which can be used to provide vocational training and also impart self-reliance.

Other Community Efforts Highlighted

Apart from describing the modern morung system of education, PM Modi also lauded the other exemplary efforts being taken by communities in Nagaland for climate resilience, such as:

• Women of Chizami Village are preserving a bank of more than 150 varieties of traditional seed (rice, millet, maize)
• He lauded the above efforts as a positive way of adapting to climate change through traditional knowledge.

Conclusion

PM Modi’s praise of the Morung system reflects the government’s focus on integrating tribal heritage into education, with the Naga model blending tradition and modern learning to preserve the past while preparing for the future.
