Context- A new paddy variety developed known as the Malviya Manila Sinchit Dhan -1 is likely to transform the crop production in eastern India.
Key highlights:
- The rice variety is developed from two Philippines varieties that are likely to transform the crop production in Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
- The new variety has been jointly developed by a team of scientists from BHU-Banaras Hindu University and the IRRI-International Rice Research Institute.
About Malviya Manila Sinchit Dhan -1(MMSD):
- The new rice variety is developed by two IR-International rice varieties of the Philippines. One of the varieties of the IR series is IR-8 which is often considered as the ‘miracle rice’ in the 1970s that helped increase global food production to counter hunger.
- The new paddy variant has productivity higher than conventional varieties. It ripens early and resists wind due to stronger stems and skirts drought.
- The assessments by the Indian council of Agricultural Research say that the variety’s production is around 55-65 quintal per hectare which is twice the average productivity of rice that is around 26 quintals per hectare.
- The MMSD variety aims to revolutionize the Indian rice field at least in the eastern states of Uttar pradesh,Odisha and Bihar, the production of grains has been 10% higher in these states than the other states.
- The variety takes 115 days to ripen and the grain quality is better than the existing variety which would help fetch higher prices to the growers.
- During the de-husking,hulling and milling process the head rice(whole rice ) recovery percentage is 63.5% as conventional rice gets broken more and thus reduces its market value.
