Question
Given below is the quotation of great thinker. What do this quotation convey to you in the present context?
“The strength of a society is not in its laws, but in the morality of its people.” – Swami Vivekananda (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
The quotation highlights the primacy of moral values over mere legal frameworks in sustaining a just and progressive society. Laws are external instruments of regulation, but morality represents the inner compass guiding human behavior. A society cannot thrive merely by strict enforcement of laws unless its citizens voluntarily uphold values like honesty, compassion, justice, and integrity.
In the present context, this message holds profound relevance. For instance, issues like corruption, communal disharmony, environmental degradation, and rising intolerance cannot be tackled only through legislation. Despite strong anti-corruption laws, corruption persists because of erosion of ethical conduct. Similarly, social harmony is sustained not by legal penalties alone, but by mutual respect, empathy, and moral responsibility among citizens.
Democratic institutions also rely on moral commitment. Free and fair elections require not just electoral laws, but also ethical participation by voters, political parties, and civil servants. Environmental conservation too cannot succeed without citizens internalizing sustainable values, beyond statutory compliance.
Swami Vivekananda’s words thus remind us that morality is the soul of governance and social order, while laws are its skeleton. Laws may deter wrongdoing temporarily, but morality inspires right action naturally. Therefore, strengthening ethical education, family and societal value systems, and role-model leadership becomes essential to build a society where morality complements law in achieving justice, equity, and harmony.
Conclusion: A society’s true strength lies in the moral fibre of its people, for only moral citizens can transform good laws into good governance.
