Has caste lost its relevance in understanding the multi-cultural Indian society? Elaborate your answer with illustrations. [10 Marks, GS Paper 1, 2020]
Answer
Caste remains a significant social institution in India, despite the evolution of a multi-cultural and modern society. While its overt expressions may have diminished in urban and cosmopolitan spaces, caste continues to influence various aspects of Indian life—socially, politically, and economically.
Historically, caste determined one’s occupation, social status, and even dietary habits. Although constitutional provisions like Article 15 (prohibition of discrimination) and Article 17 (abolition of untouchability) aimed to dismantle caste-based inequalities, the ground reality remains complex.
In rural India, caste still plays a critical role in determining social hierarchy, land ownership, and marital alliances. Practices like inter-caste marriages continue to face resistance, sometimes even resulting in honor killings. In urban areas, while caste identities are less visible, they resurface during matrimonial alliances or in job reservations and educational opportunities.
Politically, caste is a key factor in electoral mobilization. Political parties often select candidates based on caste equations to secure vote banks. The Mandal Commission and subsequent OBC reservations in the 1990s reignited caste consciousness, particularly among backward classes.
However, India is also witnessing a gradual transformation. The rise of Dalit entrepreneurs, increased educational mobility, and inter-caste social interactions—especially among youth in urban areas—reflect a slow dilution of rigid caste norms. Media, education, and economic liberalization have fostered new identities that sometimes transcend caste lines.
Yet, the persistence of caste-based discrimination, especially against Dalits and tribal communities, shows that caste has not lost its relevance. Recent incidents of caste-based violence and the demand for caste-based census further underscore its continued importance in understanding Indian society.
While India is evolving into a multicultural and modern society, caste remains a critical lens to understand its socio-political and economic fabric. The challenge lies in balancing affirmative action and social justice with the goal of a casteless and inclusive society.
