Answer
India is often described as a subcontinent because of its vast geographical expanse, distinct physiographic features, climatic diversity, and cultural uniqueness. The term refers to a large, self-contained landmass that forms a distinct part of a continent.
- Geographical Extent:
- India covers about 3.28 million sq. km, ranking 7th largest in the world.
- Bounded by natural frontiers: Himalayas in the north, Indian Ocean in the south, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal on the west and east.
- Its size and isolation give it the character of a continent within Asia.
- Physiographic Diversity:
- Distinct landforms such as the Himalayas, Indo-Gangetic plains, Peninsular Plateau, Coastal plains, and Islands.
- These divisions give rise to varied ecosystems and resources.
- Climatic Variation:
- Experiences tropical monsoon climate, but also exhibits extremes—arid deserts in Rajasthan, alpine conditions in Kashmir, and humid tropics in Kerala.
- This diversity sets it apart from the rest of Asia.
- Cultural and Historical Distinctiveness:
- Cradle of one of the oldest civilizations (Indus Valley).
- Development of major religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism).
- Rich linguistic, ethnic, and cultural diversity that evolved independently of other Asian regions.
- Geological Identity:
- Formed from the Indo-Australian Plate, which collided with the Eurasian Plate to create the Himalayas.
- This tectonic origin gives India a separate geological identity.
Conclusion:
India is considered a subcontinent because it stands out as a self-contained geographical, cultural, and climatic unit within Asia. Its vast size, distinct boundaries, and internal diversity make it more than just a country—an entire region with continental features.
