Context- The Prime Minister has recently inaugurated the Khelo India University Games.

Key Highlights 

    • A national level multi-sport event in India, the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) sees athletes from universities across the country compete in a variety of sports.
    • The debut version was held in Odisha in 2020. It is coordinated by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Service of Youth Undertakings and Sports alongside Relationship of Indian Colleges, Indian Olympic Affiliation and Public Games Organization.
    • It is India’s largest sporting event at the university level.
    • Following the success of the Khelo India Youth Games, the Khelo India University Games was established.
    • The goal of the Khelo India University Games is to find and prepare talented athletes between the ages of 18 and 25 for the Olympics and Asian Games.
    • Khelo India: By creating a solid foundation for all sports played in India and establishing India as a great sporting nation, the Khelo India program aims to revive the country’s sports culture at the grassroots level.
      • The High-Powered Committee will provide INR 5 lakh annually for eight years to talented players identified in priority sports disciplines at various levels.
  • KIUG 2023
    • The Khelo India College Games are being held from May 25 to June 3 in Uttar Pradesh.
    • North of 4,750 competitors from in excess of 200 colleges will contend in 21 games.
    • Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, and Gautam Buddha Nagar will host the competitions.
