Context

In ancient times, Kashmir was an important trade route on the Silk Road, a trade route that ran from Asia to Europe. Nowadays, India is regaining its strategic position in the region as its gateway to Eurasia. Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is the key region that can help New Delhi resist the encirclement of the region and open up front energy and trade markets.

Strategic Significance of Kashmir in Eurasian Integration

1. Geopolitical Pivot

  • Solving Connectivity Barriers: Pakistan has long denied India access to the overland transit corridor, isolating the country from Central Asia. A stabilized J&K offers a geographical launchpad for projecting power and connectivity into the Eurasian heartland.
  • Countering the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) passes through Gilgit-Baltistan. The development of J&K as an alternative trade route is a way India can assert its territorial sovereignty and provide a democratic and transparent alternative to China’s debt-trap diplomacy.

2. Energy Security

  • Access to Resources: Central Asia is a powerhouse of oil, natural gas, uranium, and minerals.
  • Pipeline Infrastructure: Kashmir is in the geopolitical line of sight of pipelines that are planned to be built for future use in the transnational energy corridors or existing pipelines that are rerouted around hostile areas through multi-national pipelines.

Key Pillars of Connectivity

International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)

  • The INSTC is a 7,200-km multi-modal network connecting India, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia.
  • The Kashmir Link: Connecting J&K’s upgrading rail and road infrastructure with national logistics hubs is expected to enhance the logistics connectivity between northern India and Iran’s Chabahar Port, which will cut the transit time by 40% to Eurasia.

The Ashgabat Agreement and Middle Corridor

  • India’s entry into the Ashgabat Agreement makes it easier to go through Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. J&K is the domestic economic motor that provides high value products (handicrafts, agriculture, pharmaceuticals) for these corridors.

Economic Opportunities and Regional Development

  • Horticulture & Agriculture: Exports of organic produce, saffron and apples can be enhanced with the growing demand in Central Asia and Russia which can boost farmers’ incomes in J&K.
  • Tourism & Culture: Cultural and Sufi heritage connection with Central Asian countries can draw international tourism in the region and make J&K a tourism hub and transit point.
  • Digital Connectivity: Development of cross-border data connectivity through digitial networks in Eurasian region can further assist in developing IT and digital services in J&K.

Major Challenges

  • Geopolitical instability: The fact that the situation in Afghanistan is still extremely unstable, and Pakistan is a hostile destination, are important challenges to work out in a smooth overland connectivity.
  • Terrain and Infrastructure: The rugged, mountainous terrain of the Himalayas poses severe engineering challenges, leading to project delays and high capital costs.
  • Security Frameworks: Internal stability of J&K is essential for FDI and confidence in international trade in the long term.

Way Forward

  • Improving Internal Infrastructure: Accelerate the completion of all-weather tunnels (such as Zojila and Z-Morh) for continuous domestic connectivity.
  • Sub-Regional Diplomacy: Express the need for non-discriminatory transit rights in Central Asia in the mini-lateral forums and through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • Setting up the Economic Zones: Create Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for export-oriented industries with a focus on the markets of the Eurasian region in J&K.

Conclusion

Kashmir has become not just a territorial borderland now, but a strategic bridgehead too. Making J&K a geopolitical flashpoint and an economic corridor, India can circumvent geographic limitations, ensure its energy security and become an integral part of the evolving world order in Eurasia.
