International Booker Prize

Syllabus- Awards [Prelims]

Context- The 2023 International Booker Prize went to Time Shelter, written by Georgi Gospodinov and translated into English by Angela Rodel. This is the first time the annual award has gone to a Bulgarian-language novel.

Key Highlights

  • The novel, which came out for the first time in Bulgarian in 2020, is a funny and clever look at how humans are obsessed with the past and the future and what happens when they try to get out of the present.
  • A diverse cast of characters in the book seek safety in the enigmatic Time Shelter, an underground facility where they can relive their memories or project themselves into various scenarios.
  • Some of them are escaping from individual injuries, others are searching for a superior variant of themselves, and some are only inquisitive about the conceivable outcomes of time travel. Time Shelter, on the other hand, turns out to be a trap that reveals their deepest fears and desires, as they soon discover.
  • Gospodinov and Rodel will share the £50,000 prize cash, which is granted yearly to a book converted into English and distributed in the UK or Ireland.

About the International Booker Prize

  • The International Booker Prize is given consistently to an unknown dialect book converted into English and distributed in England or Ireland.
  • Since 2016, the prize has honored the work of both the author and the translator in equal measure.
  • Short story collections and novels are both eligible.
  • Geetanjali Shree’s Tomb of Sand, translated into English by Daisy Rockwell, received the award the previous year.
  • It is distinct from the Booker Prize, which is given to the best English-language fiction work published in the UK and Ireland.
  • It has been won by Indian authors like Aravind Adiga and Arundhati Roy in the past.
