The recent death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine have led to a significant shift in India’s foreign policy towards Iran.

Currently, Iran and India have considerable diplomatic and trade relations, where Iran is one of the significant oil producers for India. Although the relations have been increasing over the last several decades, there is still tension that arose in the recent years because of a number of reasons such as India’s enhancement of relations with the US and Israel along with concerns over Iran’s nuclear capability and human rights abuses.

This change in policy is primarily motivated by energy demand diversification, enhancing political power in the South Asian region through energy diplomacy as well as to check the increasing assertiveness of China in the region.
