India’s Ranking in Religious Restrictions

Syllabus: Governance [GS Paper-2]

Context

India has been identified as one of the top 25 nations with high religious restrictions, according to a recent report. This ranking highlights the challenges faced by various religious communities within the country and raises concerns regarding the state of religious freedom.

Overview of Religious Restrictions in India

India has also been positioned among the countries of the world with high levels of religious restrictions having an Index Score of 9.3 out of 10 on the SHI. This index measures the degree of intolerance towards different religions and the freedom that a person can or cannot enjoy at worship without being a victim of persecution or discrimination. As it can be observed the score is high, this may also mean that there is a decreasing trend with regard to protection of religious tolerance and freedom in the said state.

Factors Contributing to High Religious Restrictions

Several factors contribute to India’s ranking in terms of religious restrictions:

  • Communal Violence: India has experienced multiple acts of ethno- religious friction over time, and the tension between communities is not a new thing. Such violence not only impacts the individuals but also cultivates feelings of fear in different groups of religion and hence further isolates their rights to practice.
  • Legislative Measures: There are some laws and policies that the public has regarded as discriminatory to the minorities. For example, conversion laws, cow protection and anti-terrorism laws have been viewed as specifically targeting particular religious communities and as such have fuelled the fire.
  • Social Hostilities: The presence of social hostilities, including mob violence and discrimination against minority religions, plays a significant role in shaping the environment for religious practice. Data show that more people from the communities of faith with diverse beliefs have experienced harassment and violence in recent years.

Implications for Religious Freedom

The implications of high religious restrictions are profound:

  • Impact on Minority Communities: The ranking means that minority communities in India face a stiff environment in which to operate. Such groups are invariably marginalized in all spheres of life, work, education and in their everyday social interactions.
  • International Perception: India ranking may harm the status of the country in regard to human rights and religious freedom in the world region. Some human rights are central to India’s political culture, it is possible that the countries with regard to these rights are closely attentive to India’s policies and its practices that may lead to diplomatic tension.
  • Social Cohesion: Certain increasing levels of religious restrictions could have detrimental effects to the society especially within diverse India. When people get a feeling that they are unsafe or are not welcome in a certain community because of their faith, it may create division of communities and even rip conflict between with different creeds.

Steps Toward Improvement

To address these challenges and improve its ranking on religious restrictions, India could consider several measures:

  • Strengthening Legal Protections: The recommendation of the laws that aim at preventing discrimination of people on bases of religion may be helpful in promoting the upliftment of the suppressed groups. It is important to guarantee compliance with existing laws is fair.
  • Promoting Interfaith Dialogue: This is because engaging in dialogues with people of other faith can help in the reduction of confusions and therefore hatred between the different religious groups. Strategies designed at bringing interfaith understanding may enable reducing emerging ethnic clashes due to lack of understanding or prejudice.
  • Enhancing Education on Tolerance: Holding tolerance and diversity programs that teach persons in schools, colleges, and universities about the different religions goes a long way in influencing the attitudes towards various religions in societies. It is postulated that if young generations are taught to accept the general differences that exist, they are likely to embrace those differences in future.

Conclusion

India’s ranking among nations with high religious restrictions serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges related to religious freedom within the country. Addressing these issues requires concerted efforts from both the government and civil society to foster an environment where all individuals can practice their faith freely and without fear. By promoting tolerance, understanding, and legal protections for all religions, India can work towards improving its standing in global assessments of religious freedom.
