India’s Nuclear Triad

Introduction

The nuclear triad of India is the military capability which provides delivery of nuclear weapon by three separate platforms, namely, the land, air, and sea. The formation of this triad is an important step towards strategic independence and national security of India and it guarantees an effective and viable deterrent against nuclear-armed aggressors.

Strategic Foundation: The Nuclear Doctrine

The nuclear triad in India is basically based on its Nuclear Doctrine that was instituted in 2003. The fundamental principles are:

  • No First Use (NFU): India will merely retaliate to a nuclear attack on its territory, or troops, with nuclear weapons.
  • Credible Minimum Deterrence (CMD): Having an amount of force that is capable of producing an unacceptable damage to an opponent and hence preventing a preemptive attack.
  • Civilian Control: Nuclear release power is left to Nuclear Command Authority (NCA), which is under the leadership of the Prime Minister.

The Land-Based Leg: Ballistic Missiles

The most identified and set up part of the triad is land-based missiles which are under the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

  • Prithvi Series: Tactical deterrence ballistic missiles (SRBMs).
  • Agni Series: The keystone to the Indian long range deterrence.
    • Agni-P (Prime): It is a canisterised missile of 2,000km range that is next-generation-based.
    • Agni-V: India has its ultimate Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) which has a range of more than 5,000 kilometers and can cover the entire Asia.
  • Operational Readiness: Testing of these systems are regularly conducted by users like in the case of the successful Agni-3 test in February 2026 thus keeping them reliable.

The Air-Based Leg: Strategic Aircraft

This leg offers a tactical flexibility and quick options of deployment.

  • Important Platforms: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has specialized aircraft in the delivery of nuclear weapons, which include:
    • Rafale: Newly promoted and further involved in the nuclear strike mission.
    • Mirage 2000H & SEPECAT Jaguar: Sustained platforms which have been given a service life up to approximately 2039 to sustain squadron capability.
    • Sukhoi Su-30MKI: It has been heavily modified to accommodate various strike payloads.

The Sea-Based Leg: The Survivable Deterrent

The sea component is deemed the most important in the case of a No First Use nation since the submarines are hard to detect giving the nation second strike capability.

  • Arihant-Class Submarines:
    • INS Arihant: India has the first indigenous SSBN commissioned in 2016, which is known as India’s first deterrence patrol completed in 2018.
    • INS Arighat: Ordered in 2024 to enhance a continuous presence in the sea.
    • INS Aridhaman: This third boat will enable India to have at least one nuclear-powered submarine patrolling at any time.
  • Delivery Systems: These submarines have K-15 (750 km) and K-4 (3,500 km) Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs).
