Context

The Government of India, along with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh, has officially standardised the names of 28 geographical places and features in Ladakh. These names have been included on the official Survey of India map. The main purpose of this step is to give these places proper and consistent names in official records and to make people more aware of their geographical importance.

Ladakh is an important region because of its location near the borders with China and Pakistan. Some of the places included in the list are also located in areas connected with India’s territorial claims.

What has been standardised?

The 28 geographical features belong to different categories. The list includes peaks, mountains, land areas, glaciers, passes, a valley, a river, a lake and a water body.

The list released by the Ministry of Home Affairs includes:

  • Peaks: Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.
  • Mountains: Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori.
  • Land areas: Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa.
  • Glaciers: Parpik and Skamri Glacier.
  • Passes: Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass.
  • Valley: Shkorga Valley.
  • River: Yangpa River.
  • Lake: Guru Rinpoche.
  • Water body: Hot Spring.

Role of Survey of India

  • Survey of India is the national mapping agency of India. The organisation carries out surveys and prepares official maps and geographical records.
  • Standardising geographical names helps keep government maps and records consistent. It also gives officials, researchers and the public a common name to refer to a particular geographical feature.
  • This is useful for remote areas where different sources might use different names for the same place. Standard names also support geographical research, government planning, mapping and administration.
  • The exercise is therefore more than simply recording names. It helps maintain consistency in India’s official geographical records.

Strategic importance of Ladakh

  • Ladakh has an important position along India’s Himalayan frontier. The region shares an international boundary with China and is also connected geographically with the area adjoining Pakistan.
  • Some of the places on the list have also been important from a security perspective. Gogra and Hot Spring, for example, were associated with the India-China military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The Gogra-Hot Springs area was one of the friction points during the border tensions that began in 2020.
  • Including such places on official maps gives them a standard geographical reference. This is useful when the locations are mentioned in government records, maps and other official documents.

Geographical and cartographic importance

  • Place names are an important part of mapping. They appear in maps, administrative records, navigation, academic studies and government planning.
  • Using standard names reduces confusion across maps and records. This is especially relevant in Ladakh because the region has difficult terrain and many remote locations.

Connection with border management

  • Standardising these names also relates to the broader work of geographical and territorial documentation in India.
  • India has carried out similar exercises in other border areas, including Arunachal Pradesh. These exercises help maintain consistent geographical names in official Indian records.
  • At the same time, giving a place an official name on an Indian map does not by itself settle a territorial dispute or change the legal status of a disputed area. Territorial claims and boundary settlements involve diplomatic, legal and strategic processes.
  • The Ladakh exercise therefore has geographical and administrative importance. It provides consistent names for official records while documenting places located in a strategically important region.
