Historical Ties

Phase of Hostility (1947 – 2001)

  • Partition Fallout and Kashmir Conflict: The partition led to huge migrations and violence. The first India Pakistan conflict passed off over Kashmir in 1947, resulting in Pakistan gaining control over an element, leading to ongoing tensions. In 1949, the Karachi Agreement established a give up-hearth line overseen through UN military observers and endorsed a referendum in the territory, although one by no means materialized. 
  • India Pakistan RelationsIndia Pakistan Wars and Agreements: Subsequent conflicts in 1965 and 1971 brought about UN interventions and agreements just like the Tashkent Agreement and the Shimla Agreement. India secured the Siachen glacier location in 1984 (Operation Meghdoot).
  • Terrorism and Nuclear Tests: Pakistan’s aid for insurgency in Kashmir, a successful nuclear test in 1998, and the Kargil War in 1999 marked this era. The assault on the Indian Parliament in 2001 intensified hostilities.

Pacification Phase (2001-2008)

  • Peace Efforts: Despite setbacks, projects like the Lahore Declaration and Vajpayee’s principles aimed toward improving relations.
  • Composite Dialogue Process: Started in 2004, along with agreements on trade and gas pipelines, showed symptoms of development.
  • Mumbai Attacks: However, the Mumbai terror assaults in 2008 strained relations.

Phase of Passive Relations (2008 – 2015)

  • Low-Key Interactions: This section noticed minimal talk and efforts to establish trust, with discussions often stalling.
  • Neighborhood First Policy: India prioritized local cooperation, leading to some advantageous gestures and visits.
  • Indian Prime Minister’s (PM) Visit to Pakistan: In 2015, Indian PM visit signaled a significant shift.

Phase of Renewed Hostility (2015 – 2019)

  • Escalating Hostilities: Marked by using attacks and tensions, irritated via initiatives just like the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
  • Series of Attacks: Terror assaults, together with the Pulwama assault in 2019, prompted Indian Air Force’s Balakot airstrikes and diplomatic tensions.

Timeline

  • Partition and Early Conflicts: The partition of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947 brought about large-scale migrations and violence.
    • The first major warfare came with the First Kashmir War (1947-48) over the disputed place of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Wars and Conflicts: The  nations fought 3 first wars:
    • 1965 War: Another struggle over Kashmir, resulting in a UN-mandated ceasefire.
    • 1971 War: Resulted within the independence of Bangladesh (previously East Pakistan) after a brutal conflict.
    • 1999 Kargil Conflict: A short but extreme warfare inside the Kargil district of Kashmir where India emerged effective.
  • Nuclearization: Both countries performed nuclear assessments in 1998, this has introduced a brand new measurement to the strategic calculus.
  • Peace Efforts and Dialogues: There have been several tries at dialogue and peace-constructing, including the Agra Summit (2001) and the Lahore Summit (1999).
  • Terrorism and Security Issues: Attacks like the 2001 Indian Parliament assault and the 2008 Mumbai assaults have appreciably strained relations.
  • Pulwama Attack: In February 2019, an assault on a convoy of Indian paramilitary forces in Pulwama, Kashmir, killed at minimum 40 soldiers.
  • Current Dynamics: The members of the family continue to be strained, with sporadic talk and efforts at normalization, but ongoing issues like the Kashmir dispute, go-border terrorism, and political tensions continue to dominate the relationship.

Areas of Cooperation

  • Indus Water Treaty: This treaty, established in 1960, governs the use of the Indus River and its tributaries.
  • Kartarpur Corridor Agreement (2019): An Agreement between India and Pakistan for the facilitation of pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Pakistan, was signed in 2019 with a purpose to fulfill the the long-standing demand of the pilgrims to have smooth and free access to the holy Gurudwara.
  • Cricket: Cricket fits between India and Pakistan frequently entice huge attention and have occasionally been used as a platform to ease tensions and foster goodwill.
  • Bilateral Talks: Periodic diplomatic dialogues and summits provide structures for addressing various issues and finding common floor.
  • Peace Agreements: Simla Agreement (1972), Lahore Summit Declaration (1999), Agra Summit (2001) are the most important peace establishing agreements signed between both the countries.
