India-Germany Cooperation

Context- In a recent meeting, the Indian Prime Minister and the German Chancellor reached an agreement on a Vision Statement to strengthen technology and innovation cooperation.

Key Highlights

    • It is thought to be the most comprehensive economic agreement that the two major economies have ever signed.
  • Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development:
      • During the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Berlin for the 6th IGC (Inter-Governmental Consultations), both leaders discussed the status of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), which India and Germany had launched.
      • The Global Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) is a unified alliance that serves as a political compass and helps to forge strong ties between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals.
      • Germany will also add an additional €10 billion to their development cooperation portfolio for India as part of this.
  • Hydrogen in Green:
      • The cooperation on Green Hydrogen was agreed upon by both nations.
      • In September 2022, the Indo-German Green Hydrogen Task Force was established, and an Action Plan is nearing completion.
  • Cooperation for triangular development:
      • India and Germany agreed to collaborate on development projects in third countries during the sixth IGC.
      • The four projects, which were announced in May 2022, are currently in various implementation stages:
    • Cameroon: Utilizing Rooted Apical Cuttings (RAC) technology, potato seeds can be produced.
    • Malawi: Models of agribusiness incubators for women in 
    • Ghana’s agriculture and food systems: Creating Businesses Based on Bamboo for a Sustainable Life and Income Generation in Ghana
    • Peru: Creating a prototype of a geospatial portal for the purpose of planning, monitoring, and evaluating the social programs and interventions carried out by the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion of Peru (MIDIS).
    • Initiative for the Indo-Pacific Ocean:
      • The Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) now includes Germany.
  • Submarines:
    • The proposed deal between Germany and India to jointly construct six conventional submarines for the Indian Navy was the subject of discussion between the two nations.

What is the purpose of the Vision Document?

  • This cooperation is firmly guided by their shared democratic values and respect for universal human rights and focuses on strengthening ties between industry and encouraging cooperation on the development of advanced technologies like AI and 6G.
  • The Inter-Governmental Agreement on “Cooperation in Scientific Research and Technological Development,” which was signed in May 1974, established India and Germany’s long history of science and technology, research, and innovation cooperation.

  • Government : With a President serving as the head of state and a Chancellor serving as the head of government, Germany is a federal parliamentary republic.
  • Principal Industrial Areas: Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Ruhr, Ruhr, and Stuttgart.
