Great Indian Bustard, Asian Elephant and Bengal Florican have been classified as “endangered migratory species” by a UN body, paving the way for trans-boundary conservation efforts. India’s proposal for inclusion of the three species in the global list for international protection under the UN’s Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species was accepted unanimously on Thursday. The proposal was accepted by 130 countries that are party to the convention at the ongoing 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS COP 13).

10th edition of Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad being organised in New Delhi
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday urged the younger people to shun negativism, join forces of growth, take an active interest in the country’s politics and participate in the nation-building activities. Speaking at the 10th edition of the Indian Student Parliament organised by the MIT-School of Government, Naidu called politics a vehicle for serving the people. He added it brings about the desired socio-economic change and takes the country to new levels of development besides strengthening the foundations of democracy. Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan also shared his political experience with the students at the event, which will conclude on February 23.

World Bank releases report “Delivering Road Safety in India”
India needs to invest an estimated extra $109 billion in road safety over the next decade to halve its crash fatalities, the World Bank said in a report released on a day when at least 35 people were killed in four separate accidents in the country. The Bank said such an investment will bring economic benefits equivalent annually to 3.7 per cent of the GDP. The report titled “Delivering Road Safety in India” was released at the ‘Third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety’ in Stockholm. It points to the high death rate on India’s roads caused by chronic lack of investment in systemic, targeted, and sustained road safety programmes and identifies relevant investment priorities to reverse the trend.

Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw named EY Entrepreneur of Year 2019
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairperson and managing director, Biocon, was named the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 at the 21st edition of the awards. She will now represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award (WEOY) in Monte Carlo between June 4 and 6. Mazumdar-Shaw was named the winner by an eight-member jury panel, led by Kotak Mahindra Bank Managing Director and CEO Uday Kotak. The award ceremony was attended by over 500 business personalities in New Delhi on Wednesday Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Tuhin Parikh, senior managing director (Real estate), Blackstone India, was the first recipient of the Transformational Impact Person of the Year award. According to EY, this new category has been launched to recognise individuals who have transformed both the industry and ecosystem in India.

India ranked 77th in the recently released Sustainability Index
India ranked 77th on a sustainability index that takes into account per capita carbon emissions and ability of children in a nation to live healthy lives and secures 131st spot on a flourishing ranking that measures the best chance at survival and well-being for children, according to a UN-backed report. The report was released on Wednesday by a commission of over 40 child and adolescent health experts from around the world. It was commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and The Lancet medical journal. In the report assessing the capacity of 180 countries to ensure that their youngsters can survive and thrive, India ranks 77th on the Sustainability Index and 131 on the Flourishing Index
