As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes the landscape of various industries around the world, India is revisiting its engineering education system with a focus on bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical skills needed in industry, paving the way for the Indian workforce to compete on the global stage.

  • India aspires to be a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Semiconductors, Quantum technologies and Advanced manufacturing and digital economy in the world.
  • Engineering graduates will be a key pillar of success in attaining this vision.
  • While top institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are performing very well, many engineering colleges are experiencing declines in student enrollment, employability issues, and even shutdowns.
  • Acknowledging the issues, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has put 58 engineering colleges under progressive closure for the 2025-26 academic year.

Why is Engineering Education Losing Its Appeal?

    • Actually, many engineering graduates don’t possess practical skills and skills that are applicable to industry.
    • A curriculum that is out of date doesn’t match the speed of technological changes.

    • Many colleges are faced with glaring problems of poor infrastructure, lack of faculty, and a poor research environment.
    • The low admissions have been a financial burden for many institutions.

Role of AICTE

  • Technical education is regulated by AICTE, which approves engineering institutions and keeps a check on the academic standards.
  • It guarantees adherence to the norms covering faculty, laboratories, infrastructure and governance etc.
  • A policy of progressive closure is implemented, which means the institutions with poor performance are not allowed to take new students and existing batches are allowed to complete their education process.

Key Challenges Facing Engineering Education

  • Quality over Quantity

    • Nearly 15 lakh seats are approved for engineering undergraduates in the country; however, many of these are vacant.
    • It is not a lack of capacity, but a lack of quality and relevance.
  • Skill Gap

    • The demand for skills in AI, robotics, semiconductor design, cloud computing and problem-solving across multiple disciplines is growing.
    • Limited practical exposure means that many graduates are still not able to get jobs.
  • Weak Industry-Academia Linkages

    • Inadequate cooperation between universities and the industry limits innovation, internships and research.
  • Limited Research and Innovation

    • The vast majority of institutions do little to nothing for patents, start-ups, technology transfer and high-tech research.

  • Helps India move towards its dream of becoming a technology and innovation hub of the world.
  • Enhances the digital economy and advanced manufacturing.
  • Promotes research, entrepreneurship, and indigenous technological development.
  • Improves global competitiveness and employability of Indian engineers.

Way Forward

  • Update engineering courses regularly with the following: AI, Machine Learning, Cyber Security, Robotics, Semiconductor Technology, Sustainability.
  • Move from rote to competency-based, project and interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Increase the collaboration between industry and academia by offering internships, live projects and research collaboration opportunities.
  • Promote Innovation, Startups, patents, and entrepreneurship in Engineering Institutions.
  • Look at the track record of colleges for producing employable graduates and not just infrastructure, research output and innovation.
  • Increase faculty professional development programs to address new technologies.
  • Encourage international cooperation and international accreditation systems for improving the quality of education.

  • The nation’s technological dreams will not be realized unless it not only churns out more engineers but also highly skilled, innovative and competitive engineers across the country.
  • Creating a quality-based engineering ecosystem, rather than quantity driven, is vital for India’s emergence as a leader in the AI era and a knowledge-based economy.
