Formation of Smog and Fumigation

What is Smog?

  • When smoke and fog unite they produce smog. This environment-contaminant appears as irregular gray or brownish smoke through the air. 
  • Atmospheric pollutants which emit from vehicles along with factories and other sources react with sunlight to create smog in the air. 
  • Smoke and fog produce smog primarily in cities characterized by heavy vehicle and industrial operations.

Types of Smog

The two principal forms of smog exist in the world today.

Photochemical Smog

  • Photochemical smog develops when the atmosphere reacts between sunlight exposure and pollutants which consist of NOx and VOCs.
  • The occurrence of this type of pollution follows warmer climates with more solar exposure.
  • People typically see brown air pollution called photochemical smog in Los Angeles together with other cities.

Sulfurous Smog (Industrial Smog)

How Does Smog Form?

The processes required to build smog include the following:

Emission of Pollutants

  • Ocean water mixes with polluting gas emissions from vehicles through which vehicles release nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons into the environment.
  • The facilities release sulfur dioxide and multiple dangerous pollutant gases alongside it.

Reaction in the Atmosphere

  • The pollutants react to sunlight exposure which initiates chemical changes.
  • The chemical reactions generate both ozone and detrimental air particles.

Accumulation in the Air

  • The mixture of contaminants with fog or moisture produces thick air pollutants which form smog haze.
  • The dispersion of smog within an area depends on weather conditions since these elements can cause both scattering and trapping of the pollutants.

What is Fumigation?

  • The toxic gas accumulation near the ground is called fumigation although this process differs from the original phenomenon. 
  • Fumigation occurs during temperature inversion when pollutants become trapped near the ground. 
  • The inability of dangerous gases to escape causes health problems specifically targeting individuals situated in low-lying regions.
