Dark matter’s main rival theory

Syllabus: Science and Technology [GS Paper-3]

Context

The Cassini spacecraft’s recent findings have cast significant doubt on the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory, a rival to the widely accepted Dark Matter theory. MOND, proposed by Mordehai Milgrom in 1983, attempts to explain the behaviour of galaxies without invoking Dark Matter. The theory modifies Newton’s laws of motion to account for the observed phenomena. However, Cassini’s discoveries have challenged MOND’s viability, prompting a reevaluation of the theory’s merits.

What is MOND?

  • MOND is a theoretical model, the main aim of which is to mimic all the dynamics of galaxies, without invoking the need to use dark matter.
  • This theory assumes that to account for the departure from expected motion, the law of gravity has to be changed and will have to be reduced at low gravity areas, which are observed in the fringes of galaxies.
  • MOND theory postulates that rotation curves of galaxies can be attributed to new physics without the requirement for this mysterious substance – Dark Matter.
  • Nonetheless, there is a set of issues for which MOND fails to provide adequate explanation, such as dynamics of galaxy clusters and general large-scale structure of the universe.

The Dark Matter Debate

  • Dark Matter, also known as non-baryonic matter, is a postulated type of matter, thought to be responsible for roughly 27% of the total mass-energy density of the known universe.
  • It was brought in to help understand what causes galaxies to act in different ways and groups of galaxies, as there is not enough visible matter to account for the action.
  • Nonetheless, there are other opinions for instance, those of the scientists that suggest that MOND can give the observed effects without utilising Dark Matter.
  • Two sky groups have been battling for years, explaining the nature of Dark Matter and Modified Newtonian Dynamics.

Cassini’s Findings

  • Cassini data of the Saturnian system show that MOND fails to provide an accurate representation of interactions in the Saturn’s system.
  • From the data it can be inferred that Dark matter still forms a crucial part of the system’s mechanics, especially for the movement of Saturn’s moons and the formation of its rings.
  • Cassini observations have dealt MOND a severe blow because the theory cannot explain the observed astrophysical objects without calling for extra hidden mass.

Implications for MOND

  • Hence, MOND faces a big challenge as provided by Cassini findings, meaning it has limited possibility of being the true theory besides Dark Matter.
  • Although MOND still enjoys some support among researchers, the majority of scientists who study dark matter and dark energy have doubts in its truth.
  • This is on the backdrop when it was unable to define the interactive dynamics of the Saturnian system plus instances of it failing in explaining galaxy clusters as well as large structure formations has downplayed its usage of MOND.

Future Directions

  • The search for Dark Matter continues, with scientists employing innovative methods to detect and understand this enigmatic substance.
  • Upcoming experiments, such as the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment and the XENON1T experiment, aim to directly detect Dark Matter particles. Theoretical models, such as supersymmetry and extra dimensions, also offer potential explanations for Dark Matter’s nature.
  • As scientists continue to explore the mysteries of the universe, the debate between Dark Matter and MOND will likely persist, driving progress in our understanding of the cosmos.

Conclusion

The Cassini mission’s results have further solidified Dark Matter’s position as the leading explanation for the observed phenomena in the universe. While MOND is not yet entirely discredited, its prospects appear bleak in light of recent discoveries. The search for Dark Matter continues, with scientists employing innovative methods to detect and understand this enigmatic substance. The debate may not be settled, but the scientific community is one step closer to unravelling the mysteries of the universe.
