ChatGPT-Powered WhatsApp Chatbot

Syllabus- Science and Technology [GS Paper-3]

Context- A ChatGPT-powered WhatsApp chatbot is being developed by MeitY’s BHASHINI to assist Indian farmers in learning about various government programs.

Key Highlights

  • India’s platform for language translation that is led by artificial intelligence (AI) is called BHASHINI (BHASHa INterface for India).
  • Due to ChatGPT’s limited support for local languages and current reliance on English for input, the WhatsApp chatbot’s launch may take some time.

What are the envisioned functions?

  • Voice notes will enable users to send questions.
  • A user could simply use voice notes to ask a question and ChatGPT would respond with a voice-based response.
  • The chatbot has been developed with the rural and agrarian population of India in mind, who rely on government programs and subsidies the most.
  • It is essential to develop a language model that is capable of successfully recognizing and comprehending these potential users because they speak a diverse range of languages.
  • Numerous Indian farmers who may be unfamiliar with smartphone typing will benefit from this.
  • 12 languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Odia, and Assamese, will be supported by the WhatsApp chatbot powered by ChatGPT.
  • The Bhasha Daan Initiative will be utilized because the majority of users of this chatbot will not speak English.
  • As part of Project BHASHINI, Bhasha Daan is an effort to solicit inputs for multiple Indian languages from the public. It asks citizens to contribute to the creation of an open data repository for digitally enriching one’s own language.

What are the issues with these models?

  • It’s possible that the responses of generative AI models like Google’s Bard or ChatGPT are not always accurate.
  • Bard recently made a mistake regarding the James Webb Space Telescope. After the error was discovered, the value of the company’s shares fell by USD 100 billion.
  • The WhatsApp chatbot can only respond to straightforward inquiries about government programs and other topics during its current testing phase.
  • This is primarily because ChatGPT cannot access information from the Internet in real time, which is a current limitation.
  • The dataset used to train ChatGPT’s language model only contains information up until 2021.
  • Nevertheless, this may soon change. A new version of Microsoft’s search engine Bing, based on an improved version of the same AI technology that powers ChatGPT, was recently announced.
  • An updated version of GPT 3.5, the AI language model developed by OpenAI that underpins ChatGPT, will power the feature.
  • This was referred to as the “Prometheus Model,” and it claimed that it was more capable than GPT 3.5 of responding to search queries with more recent data and annotated responses.

What’s ChatGPT?

  • GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), an OpenAI-developed large-scale neural network-based language model, is a variant of ChatGPT.
  • To produce text that is human-like, GPT models are trained on a large amount of text data.
  • It is able to come up with responses to a wide variety of questions, provide explanations, and participate in conversations.
  • The ChatGPT is able to “answer follow-up questions,” as well as “admit its mistakes, challenge false premises, and refuse unsuitable requests.”
  • Additionally, reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) was used to train the chatbot.
  • Usage:
  • It can be put to use in real-world situations for things like digital marketing, making content online, helping customers with questions, and even helping debug code, as some users have discovered.
  • The bot can mimic human speech patterns while answering a wide range of questions.
  • It is being viewed as an alternative to basic emails, party planning lists, CVs, and even essays and homework for college students.
  • Examples have demonstrated that it can also be used to write code.
