Brahmaputra Basin

Introduction
The Brahmaputra Basin, one of the most significant river basins in South Asia, encompasses vast areas in India, China (Tibet), Bhutan, and Bangladesh. This basin is characterized by its diverse topography, rich biodiversity, and substantial socio-economic importance to the millions of people residing within its boundaries.
Geographic Extent
- The Brahmaputra River originates in the Chemayungdung Glacier in Tibet, where it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo.
- It flows eastwards through the Tibetan Plateau before making a dramatic turn southwards through the Himalayas into India.
- In India, the river traverses the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, before entering Bangladesh, where it merges with the Ganges and Meghna rivers to form the world’s largest delta—the Sundarbans.

Key Regions
- Tibet (China): The upper course of the Brahmaputra, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo, flows through this region, characterized by high altitudes and arid conditions.
- Arunachal Pradesh (India): The river enters India through this state, where it is known as the Siang or Dihang. The region is marked by mountainous terrain and heavy rainfall.
- Assam (India): Here, the river broadens into a vast floodplain, supporting extensive agriculture and a dense population.
- Bangladesh: In its lower course, the Brahmaputra, known as the Jamuna, forms part of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, a fertile area crucial for agriculture and fisheries.
Hydrology and Climate
- The Brahmaputra Basin experiences a diverse climate, ranging from the cold, arid conditions of Tibet to the tropical monsoon climate of Assam and Bangladesh.
- The basin receives substantial rainfall, especially during the monsoon season (June to September), which contributes to the river’s high discharge and propensity for flooding.
River Flow and Flooding
- The Brahmaputra River has one of the highest sediment loads and water discharge rates in the world. Its flow varies significantly with the seasons, with peak discharges during the monsoon leading to frequent and severe flooding.

- Threats to the biodiversity of the basin include resource extraction, habitat degradation, and climate change. Cooperation between countries in the basin is essential to protect its biodiversity and improve the lives of local communities.
Agriculture and Livelihoods
- Agriculture: The fertile plains of Assam and Bangladesh are major rice-growing regions. Other important crops include jute, tea, and various vegetables.
- Fishing: The river and its tributaries are vital for the fishing industry, which is a primary source of protein and income for many communities.
- Transportation: The Brahmaputra is navigable for large stretches, making it a crucial waterway for transporting goods and people.
