Argentina’s Falklands Issue

[GS Paper 2 - International Relations]

Context – Argentina acknowledges India’s support on the Falklands row. The foreign minister of Argentina acknowledged India’s Traditional Support for resolving the “territorial dispute”. He even put forth that Argentina and India share the same anti-colonial heritage and values.

The government of Argentina launched a campaign in India demanding negotiation with the United Kingdom to settle the territorial dispute over the Falkland Islands

About Falkland Islands

  • The Malvinas Islands, also called the Islas Malvinas, or the Falkland Islands, lie in the South Atlantic Ocean. 
  • It is the internally self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. 
  • The timeline of the Falkland Islands can be summarized as: 
  • 18th Century: the Falklands was conquered and colonized by the British, French, and Spanish
  • 1700s: The Island remained unoccupied
  • 1764: The French established a colony
  • 1811: No colonial power on the island
  • 1820: An American reinitiated a long controversy claiming control of the Falklands on behalf of Argentina leading to minor conflicts between the UK and Argentina.
  • 1840: The islands became a crowned territory and the British allowed Scottish settlers to develop a settlement
  • 1964: The status of the Island was discussed in the UN Committee on decolonization
  • 1965: The UNGA passed a non-binding resolution expressing the dispute on the Island between Argentina and the UK and called for a peaceful settlement
  • 1977: The countries called for discussion
  • 1982: Argentina attacked the Falkland islands holding claims that the UK illegally annexed the Island leading to The Falkland War. The War terminated with the United Kingdom’s Victory 
  • Argentina claims the Islands based on an official document of 1493 modified by the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494). 
  • Britain’s claims are based on its open, continuous, effective possession, occupation, and administration.

India-Argentina Relations

  • India and Argentina hold historical, cultural, and linguistic relations. 
  • Last year both nations celebrated 71 years of bilateral relations. 
  • The areas of cooperation between the Nations include: Political relations, Economic relations, Agriculture, Nuclear energy, Science and Technology, Cultural cooperation, People to people contact. 
  • Major exports from India to Argentina include – Two-wheelers, Iron, Steel, Agrochemicals, Handmade yarn fabrics, Organic chemicals, Medications and drugs, Motor vehicles. 
  • Major imports to India from Argentina include – Vegetable oils, Finished leather, Cereals, Residual chemicals, Pulses. 
  • India and Argentina have supported each other on major international issues.
