75/25 plan on covering hypertenisve and diabetic patients

Context– The health ministry recently launched the ambitious 75/25 plan on bringing 75 million hypertenisve and diabetic population under standard care by 2025.

 Key highlights:

  • The plan, the largest exercise in the world against Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) was launched on 17th May, World hypertension day.
  •  The plan shall cover the country’s vast network of primary health centers(PHCs).

 About the Initiative:

  •  The ministry shall train 40,000 primary health care medical officers on standard treatment workflow for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to meet the target through the Shashakt portal.
  • The initiative was launched by the health member of the NITI Aayog. The strategy to deal with the problem is to scale up hypertension control,equip PHCs with protocols to keep diabetes under control and check and reduce organ damage. 
  • According to the NCD portal, 26,42,038 diabetic patients were under treatment against 63,30,155 hypertensives in 714 clinics and 6068 community health centers.
  •  As per the new plan health and wellness centers shall cover a population of 5000, 1850 will be screened by 2025 and 80% will be put on treatment by December 2025. 
  • The ministry also released the operational guidelines for the National Programme for prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases 2023-2030.

 About Hypertension

  •  Hypertension also known as high blood pressure is a major leading cause of cardiovascular disease mortality globally and in the WHO-south east asia region.
  •  In India over 220 million are diagnosed with hypertension. 1 in 4 men, 1 in 5 women, and one in every ten adults has diabetes or hypertension.
  • The NCDs are responsible for 63% of deaths in India with 55% premature deaths.The causes of hypertension that can be modified are excessive salt consumption, high saturated and trans fats diet, low fruits and vegetable intake, low or no physical activity, high consumption of alcohol,tobacco and obesity. Hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, renal failure and blindness
  •  Changes in lifestyle, healthier diet, exercise and quitting tobacco and alcohol are common mitigating measures to deal with hypertension.
